Hemorrhoids are a very common medical problem. They are small veins around the rectum and anus that have become varicose - dilated and swollen. Hemorrhoids may become inflamed, develop small blood clots or even cause minor bleeding.

There are two types of hemorrhoids:

External hemorrhoids are round, purple and feel like “soft swellings”. They develop under the skin just outside the opening of the anus. They can itch and be painful (especially during a bowel movement) and are often tender to the touch.

Internal hemorrhoids are found further inside the rectum. Typically, they're not painful; you may not even know they're there unless they start to bleed. However, internal hemorrhoids can be quite painful - in particular when straining pushes them out through the anus. This is called a prolapsed hemorrhoid.

Hemorrhoidal symptoms include:
  • Anal itch
  • Anal pain
  • Rectal burning
  • Rectal pain
  • Anorectal discomfort
  • Swelling of hemorrhoidal tissue
  • Inflammation of the anorectal surface
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Rectal bleeding
